APS4 pitch guide (1000 words)
Short answer: For a 1000-word APS4 pitch, use 3 examples of about 273 words each, between a roughly 100-word opening and a 81-word close. The panel wants evidence that you handle a wider range of work, solve problems without being told how, and start to support others.
What APS4 panels expect
An APS4 role adds independence and judgement inside guidelines. The panel wants evidence that you handle a wider range of work, solve problems without being told how, and start to support others.
- Handling varied or more complex cases with less supervision
- Using judgement to interpret procedures and deciding when to escalate
- Sharing knowledge, checking others' work or helping train new starters
- Identifying problems in processes and proposing fixes
Structure and word budget for 1000 words
1000 words usually means three examples in different contexts, so the panel sees breadth rather than one strength repeated.
| Part | Words | What goes here |
|---|---|---|

What to emphasise at APS4
- Problem-solving within the rules: how you worked out what to do
- Prioritising competing demands, with numbers that show the pressure
- Helping colleagues: templates, tips, training or quality checks
- Process improvements, even small ones, with a measurable effect
What to avoid
- Examples where your supervisor made every decision
- Pure APS3 evidence (accurate processing) without any judgement or initiative
- Vague teamwork claims; name what you did for the team
Verbs that suit APS4 (only if accurate): prioritised, investigated, escalated, drafted, trained, updated, improved.
Coming from outside the APS? Team-leader-in-training, senior customer service or coordinator roles outside government often map well to APS4.
Fictional example outline: Customer Liaison Officer (APS4)
An outline, not a script. The scenarios are invented. Use them to see what APS4-level evidence looks like, then write about your own experience.
Example 1: Improving phone scripts
- Situation: Callers were often transferred because frontline scripts were outdated.
- Task: Reduce unnecessary transfers.
- Action: Reviewed transfer logs; drafted updated scripts for the five most common issues; tested them with colleagues; got approval and briefed the team.
- Result: Transfers for those issues dropped noticeably over the next two months.
Example 2: Handling a vulnerable client
- Situation: A caller disclosed they were at risk.
- Task: Respond safely and follow procedure.
- Action: Stayed calm; followed the vulnerable-client procedure; connected them to the right support service; documented the call; debriefed with my supervisor.
- Result: Client was connected to support the same day; my notes were used as a model in team training.
Example 3: Building a team knowledge base
- Situation: Answers to tricky questions lived in individual inboxes.
- Task: Make them easy for everyone to find.
- Action: Proposed a shared page; collected and checked 40 answers; set a simple update routine; encouraged colleagues to add to it.
- Result: The page became the team's first stop; new starters said it was the most useful resource in their induction.
